God is working on Fred.

I just found this online... hilarious!

College campuses are breeding grounds for all sorts of ideas-and as R.C. Sproul so brilliantly points out-there are consequences for every idea. What follows is a perfect example. I am calling you to pray. I ask that you please take the time to read this entry. I will do my best to be brief.

I have written in the past about an active group on campus-The Atheist Agenda. I have also written about a friendship that I along with others in Baptist Student Ministries have with one of their members, "Fred." Well, God is working on "Fred" and I passionately ask for you to intercede for him, pray for him to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a spiritual battle and the war won't be won by arguing or debating "Fred" into the Kingdom. He is drawn to us in part, I believe, by the love he sees and receives. He doesn't know what to do with that. Please pray for him.

But this entry is not about "Fred." It is about an idea or ideas that are quite dangerous: Hedonism, Nihilism, Materialism and Humanism-and will be played out on our campus soon. As much as I want you to pray for "Fred's" salvation, I want to inform you of something that takes place on UTSA-and something that will soon take place on UTSA. For those of you who went to college "back in the day"-times, well, they have changed. For those of you who have children in college-perhaps this will be a wake-up call to pray for your student and to keep those lines of communication open. For those of you in ministry to students in High School or Junior High-I would hope that this entry would challenge you to do more than amuse your students to death-but to equip them to become strong, fruit-bearing disciples of Jesus who will know what they believe and will impact their world.

Annually, The Atheist Agenda has a "Smut for Smut" day in which they encourage students to bring Bibles (or any other "sacred" writings) and exchange the Scripture for pornography. Bring a Bible, leave with a pornographic magazine. While the ploy is sophomoric, it nonetheless generates a buzz and media coverage. In reality, the number of students who exchange Scripture for pornography is actually small-but do not be surprised if they receive coverage on either television or in the paper. The ideas expressed here: Hedonism, Nihilism, Humanism-Materialism. There is no afterlife. There is no Creator. There is ultimately nothing beyond what we can see and touch and measure-so the only 'rational' thing to do is to do whatever makes you feel good.

I know many of you if not most are offended that Scripture would be referred to as "smut." It is hard to hear. I would remind us all: Do not be surprised when lost people act like...well, lost people. Instead of anger-let us pray. More on this later.

In addition, we received an invitation from The Atheist Agenda to "debate" the issue of pornography on November 12th. While some might want to jump at such an opportunity, we are not going to do this. First, we are sponsoring a special week for the women of UTSA and we will be committed every day that week, so time would not allow us to do so even if we wanted. Second, with this group-and with most groups hostile to Christianity-debate rarely "works." It would be easy to win the argument but lose the people. This happens many times when well-meaning Christians are more concerned with proving a point than they are the person they are ministering to. Third, I am not naive enough to think that there would be a level playing field. If they set the agenda and the ground rules, there would be little in the way of fairness in terms of debate.

Instead, I am going to talk to our students about a different approach: First, to fervently intercede for The Atheist Agenda-to pray for the salvation of all who are in the organization. Second, to love well. The love of Christ compels us to love the lost. Third, to shine brightly. One reason (like it or not-this is reality) that we believers are often mocked is not because we shine brightly, but rather because a lost and dying world sees us as dull, irrelevant, hypocritical, self-righteous and unloving. They do not see the power of God resting on us. They see busy religious people telling the culture everything we are against-but not sharing the things we Christians are for. They know more about the things we won't do than they do what we truly believe and why.

Of course, the Atheist Agenda is not the only group strongly opposed to Christians on campus. There is the Secular Society, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance, and soon to come, "Club X"-an organization devoting its energies to gathering students for the purpose of watching pornography.

UTSA needs your prayers. The above examples are actually the extreme or fringe groups on campus that propagate the fleshing out of the ideas of Nihilism, Hedonism, Materialism and Humanism. There are of course Sororities and Fraternities who also spend a great amount of energy encouraging students to "eat, drink for tomorrow we die." College campuses are indeed challenging places for Christian young people and certainly places where spiritual seekers can slip through the cracks and the lost can find any number of ways to dive deeper into the darkness.

What am I asking you to do? I am asking you to pray. I am asking you to please spend time daily praying fervently for this campus. I am asking you to pray for BSM and other Christian organizations-that God would use us to impact thousands of lives. I am asking you to pray for the salvation of those who, like the Atheist Agenda, go out of their way to attack believers.

I do not want you to (and I ask you to honor my request) write the university or try to go online and find out how to contact these other organizations so you can "show them a thing or two" with your intellectual prowess. In doing so, you will only make our ministry to such groups much more difficult. I am simply asking you to pray.

Jesus said there were some strongholds or spirits that only came out by "Prayer and Fasting." Ask the Spirit to give you wisdom as to how to pray. Perhaps He will impress it upon you to fast and to pray. But please-pray.

And parents, student ministers, pastors-I pray that you will take this news and not only pray-but see this information as a wake up call. The enemy has always gone after the children-the young. We must fight the good fight, pray without ceasing, love fiercely, and equip our children to engage and thrive in a world that is growing darker by the day.
